CS Sessions – Innovation Stories – John Willshire

john smithery

The next CS Sessions speaker we’d like to introduce to you is the eponymous John Willshire, who likes to speak quickly in a Scottish accent, preferably at gatherings and conferences around the world. He founded Smithery to help companies make things that people want rather than make people want things. Smithery provides companies and agencies with strategy and structure, ground-breaking ideas and their implementation, words and pictures, community and communications. So far, Smithery has assisted the likes of the Huffington Post, Royal Mail, Carlsberg, Samsung, Google, Channel 4 and Skype. The first Smithery in-house product are Artefact Cards, blank playing cards designed to retain the qualities of playing cards, but without feeling they’re so precious it would be wrong to write on them. They help you come up with better ideas faster, and have been covered by the Financial Times and Maria Popova.

Prior to founding Smithery, John spent seven years at PHD Media in London, as Head of Innovation and as Chief Innovation Officer, so we can look forward to a bagful of juicy innovation stories from this fascinating chap.

As our very own Herdmeister admiringly put it: “Thinking without doing is as pointless as doing without thinking. John is one of the best of a new breed of strategists who actually do things. I learn a lot from him every time we collaborate”

Making Things People Want > Making People Want Things”
Tales from the development trenches of Artefact Cards, an exploration into how we can make better ideas faster.  With help from Tony Stark.

At Innovation Stories, John will explain how his Artefacts Cards actually came about and why what people ask for isn’t necessarily what they want. Somehow, Iron Man will flow into the occasion.
